ESR5 - Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments of FOWTs

Aims: The work will bridge WP1&2 by experimentally testing advanced control laws for a FOWTs
design, to be tested both in wave basin and wind tunnel and make a step forward in the reliability of complementary
wind tunnel/wave basin HIL testing approach, compared to the state-of-the-art (Lifes50+). This will advance the reliability of HIL wind tunnel/offshore basin complementary testing approach for
industry and advanced design.

ESR6 - Automated manufacturing of carbon fibre reinforced composites for offshore wind turbine blades

Aims: The work will consist of: (i) the development of automated
techniques for placement of unidirectional tapes of carbon-fibre epoxy in an offshore wind blade spar-cap or
torsion box, and (ii) the mechanical and physical characterisation of the resulting composite materials. The particular
advantages of the powder-epoxy prepreg tape route will be exploited to develop cost-effective processes that
can yield maximum carbon fibre volume fraction and fibre straightness, while accommodating the blade curvature
and twist.

Work package: WP2 - Production and deployment

Beneficiaries: Eire Composites, TU Delft

Partner: NUI Galway

ESR7 - Optimisation of dynamic cable configuration for FOWTs and farms

Aims: Dynamic cables are already used in the oil & gas industry but the numerical models need
to be adjusted to account for the specific characteristics, dynamics and requirements of FOWT structures. In
particular, subsea power cables on FOWT farms experience greater levels of mechanical stress due to the dynamic
environment, leading to an increase in cable failures. This project will go beyond the state-of-the-art by optimising
the cable configuration, whist accounting for cable fatigue, and using unique testing facilities for model validation.

Work package: WP2 - Production and deployment

ESR8 - Installation and decommissioning of large floating offshore wind farms

Aims: The installation, operation and maintenance processes offshore still represent up to a third of
the total cost of an offshore wind farm due to the challenges and costs of working at sea. In the context of floating
wind farms, there is further room to develop floating-specific innovations to reduce environmental impact, risks, and
thus also costs of these processes. This work will optimise the installation and decommissioning processes of a large number of FOWTs,
and reduce the cost, risk and environmental impact of these marine operations.

Work package: WP2 - Production and deployment

Beneficiaries: University College Cork, MARIN
