ESR1 - Multi-scale numerical modelling of floating offshore wind turbines

Aims: This project aims at investigating the low-frequency response behaviour of a semi-submersible floater. It will
use high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to better understand the hydrodynamic loading
components. A key challenge is the large computational cost associated with running wave-structure interaction
problems, especially under irregular wave conditions.

ESR2 - Aerodynamics of floating offshore wind turbines undergoing large motions

Aims: The aerodynamics of FOWTs is highly complex due to the fact that the floater motion
contributes to the varying effective wind velocity seen by the rotor. Additionally, the rotor may operate in its own
wake, in which the flow conditions are highly unsteady.
This project aims at better understanding the unsteady rotor aerodynamics, and its consequences on
design. It will also look at some open questions regarding the comparison between experimental and numerical aerodynamics of
a scaled FOWT under prescribed motion. This will be done using high fidelity numerical models.

ESR3 - Reduced-order models and machine learning for FOWT analysis and design

Aims: This ESR will develop reduced order models for the modelling of floating wind turbines. This will be based on enhancing low-fidelity physical models with high-fidelity data, hence retaining physical correctness while matching
reference data. The resulting models are expected to extrapolate better and require less training data. New
reduced models will be derived for a wind turbine undergoing wave motions. As such, ESR3 will build a bridge between
high-fidelity studies (ESR1&2) and design methods (ESR4). Machine-learning will be used
on the training-data to build improved closure models.

Work package: WP1 - Design

ESR4 - Multidisciplinary design analysis and optimisation framework for FOWT farms

Aims: This project aims at developing a multidisciplinary design analysis and optimisation (MDAO) framework for floating offshore wind farms. A MDAO consists
of coupling tools that analyse specific subcomponents with the goal of simulating the performance and cost of
the whole system. As such, MDAO is able to sacrifice the performance of some subcomponents for the benefit
of others, which combined yield a better system performance or lower cost of energy.
