The final meeting after four years of our project couldn’t have taken place in any other place but in the beautiful, sunny Florence with the vibes of the Torque2024 conference hanging in the air. Our 10 PhDs have brought valuable insights to the table for further research on floating wind energy. Not nly have they managed to stick around until the end of the project but they also built up a remarkable bond with each other, extremely unique for a project that started off in a global pandemic! 10 PhDs that will now start off applying their knowledge and experience in the industry or share it with others through further academic work. None of this was possible without the great help of our partners and great supervisors in the project from Politecnico di Milano, University College Cork, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Delft University of Technology, MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands), ÉireComposites Teo, and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Thank you all and good luck with your story further!

In May 2023, the PhD candidates within STEP4WIND have reached a great milestone in their research work! They have been able to visit the world’s largest floating wind farm in Kincardine, Aberdeen harbor. Nothing better to witness the scale of these turbines! Huge thank you to Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Flotation Energy for making this possible, for the valuable insights shared and spotless arrangements around the visit. Brief information on the Kincardine wind farm offshore Aberdeen:

Omar Ibrahim (ESR10) made it virtually to the EERA DeepWind conference in Trondheim 19-21 January, 2022! This conference is an international event aiming to present the best ongoing research and innovation related to deep sea offshore wind farms, both bottom-fixed and floating. Omar had the chance to present his ongoing piece of work titled “Semi-submersible floating offshore wind and green hydrogen: Electrolyser synchronization”. This comes as the second piece of his PhD work within STEP4WIND on coupling floating offshore wind with green hydrogen production and transportation. The aim of this research is to introduce a novel control system for a fully synchronized hydrogen production facility with an off-grid floating offshore wind output, integrated on the turbine’s deck.

The School addressed and presented state-of-the-art concepts and methods to capture effects of low-carbon policies in order to improve the scope for well-informed decision-making of policymakers. The school also sensitized the participants for the complexity faced by policymakers and researchers concerned with climate policy. Furthermore, over the five days, the school aimed to provide such skills and knowledge to students, which are required for the sophisticated task of including different effects with different features in the analysis of climate policy.
