ESR2 - Aerodynamics of floating offshore wind turbines undergoing large motions

Aims: The aerodynamics of FOWTs is highly complex due to the fact that the floater motion
contributes to the varying effective wind velocity seen by the rotor. Additionally, the rotor may operate in its own
wake, in which the flow conditions are highly unsteady.
This project aims at better understanding the unsteady rotor aerodynamics, and its consequences on
design. It will also look at some open questions regarding the comparison between experimental and numerical aerodynamics of
a scaled FOWT under prescribed motion. This will be done using high fidelity numerical models.

Aims: This ESR will develop reduced order models for the modelling of floating wind turbines. This will be based on enhancing low-fidelity physical models with high-fidelity data, hence retaining physical correctness while matching
reference data. The resulting models are expected to extrapolate better and require less training data. New
reduced models will be derived for a wind turbine undergoing wave motions. As such, ESR3 will build a bridge between
high-fidelity studies (ESR1&2) and design methods (ESR4). Machine-learning will be used
on the training-data to build improved closure models.

Overview: The training on risk considerations did not entirely took place as planned. However, our early-stage researchers had the opportunity to visit the Kincardine floating wind farm, off the coast of Scotland, thanks to ORE Catapult and their partner Flotation Energy.

A brief training session has been organised on the boat on the installation process, maintenance operations and the commercial viability of developing one of the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm in the world, hence matters on the technical, commercial, and environmental ethics challenges from concept to realisation have been addressed. Despite not taking place as a regular training session, OREC has shared their methodology for risk management of FOWTs, the associated risk registers, and a methodology for technology assessment process during consortium meetings with the ESRs. Some ESRs have applied these methods to different FOWT designs.

ORE Catapult will present its methodology for riskmanagement of FOWTs (including risks into some costs parameters), the associated risk registers, and a methodology fortechnology assessment process. The ESRs will apply these methods to different FOWT designs.

Aims: The work will consist of: (i) the development of automated
techniques for placement of unidirectional tapes of carbon-fibre epoxy in an offshore wind blade spar-cap or
torsion box, and (ii) the mechanical and physical characterisation of the resulting composite materials. The particular
advantages of the powder-epoxy prepreg tape route will be exploited to develop cost-effective processes that
can yield maximum carbon fibre volume fraction and fibre straightness, while accommodating the blade curvature
and twist.

Overview: TU Delft organized a workshop about the design and manufacturing of wind turbine blades. The goal was to provide a strong practical understanding of the context that underpins wind blade innovation, including an infusion lecture. The ESRs have been divided into teams and asked to design a wind turbine blade taking into account how the blade will be manufactured and tested. They have used CFD/FEA software to design their blades and the results have been baselined against actual blades from industry. The event included a short overview of the processes associated with aerospace manufacturing and testing, and opportunities for cross-learning between sectors has been discussed and some back-of-the-envelope calculations. Finally, there was a demonstration of the equipment used to manufacture and test blades at the composites lab located in the aircraft hall on the faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft.

ESR7 - Optimisation of dynamic cable configuration for FOWTs and farms

Aims: Dynamic cables are already used in the oil & gas industry but the numerical models need
to be adjusted to account for the specific characteristics, dynamics and requirements of FOWT structures. In
particular, subsea power cables on FOWT farms experience greater levels of mechanical stress due to the dynamic
environment, leading to an increase in cable failures. This project will go beyond the state-of-the-art by optimising
the cable configuration, whist accounting for cable fatigue, and using unique testing facilities for model validation.

Aims: The installation, operation and maintenance processes offshore still represent up to a third of
the total cost of an offshore wind farm due to the challenges and costs of working at sea. In the context of floating
wind farms, there is further room to develop floating-specific innovations to reduce environmental impact, risks, and
thus also costs of these processes. This work will optimise the installation and decommissioning processes of a large number of FOWTs,
and reduce the cost, risk and environmental impact of these marine operations.

The final meeting after four years of our project couldn’t have taken place in any other place but in the beautiful, sunny Florence with the vibes of the Torque2024 conference hanging in the air. Our 10 PhDs have brought valuable insights to the table for further research on floating wind energy. Not nly have they managed to stick around until the end of the project but they also built up a remarkable bond with each other, extremely unique for a project that started off in a global pandemic! 10 PhDs that will now start off applying their knowledge and experience in the industry or share it with others through further academic work. None of this was possible without the great help of our partners and great supervisors in the project from Politecnico di Milano, University College Cork, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Delft University of Technology, MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands), ÉireComposites Teo, and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Thank you all and good luck with your story further!
